Stop Hate Speech

How should I respond to hate speech?

How should I respond to hate speech?

Hate speech is ever-present on social media and not only burdens the people directly affected but also the quality of public debate and democracy as a whole. Do you want to advocate for a healthy discourse online? Here you will learn how.

How can I take action against hate speech?

Most hate comments come from a small number of particularly active users. Through targeted counter speech, you can push back against these comments or posts. The goal is to change the behaviour of the hateful person and to show silent readers that hate has no place in public discussion.

Important:
1. Report hate speech and insults immediately to the platform.
2. Aggressive and violent reactions are counterproductive! The goal is to improve public debate, not to directly attack the people posting hateful comments.
3. If you are part of the group being discriminated against there is no expectation that you must defend yourself.

Responding with empathy works

Studies by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich conducted as part of the Stop Hate Speech project show that counter speech which generates empathy for the affected groups reduces hate comments. We therefore know that counter speech works. Give it a try!

Note: Responding with aggression or violence makes the situation worse. Our goal is to improve public debate and protect those affected, not to directly attack those spreading hate.

Examples for your next counter speech:

  • Remember the last time you were hurt. The people from group XY that you are attacking feel exactly like this.
  • Try to put yourself in XY’s shoes before sharing messages like this.
  • Your words are especially hurtful for people from group XY.
